A Bali-themed party invite usually comes with one immediate question: what do I wear? The good news is that Balinese and Indonesian style is relaxed, colorful, and built for warm evenings, so the right outfit is more about a few good pieces than a costume. Here's what works for guests and hosts, and how to wear Indonesian textiles thoughtfully.
The Golden Rule: Textiles, Not Costumes
The easiest way to dress for a Bali theme is to wear real Indonesian textiles like batik and ikat in everyday ways: a batik dress, a sarong, a scarf, a bandana. Skip anything that imitates ceremonial or religious dress (temple attire, ceremonial headdresses, dancer costumes). A beautiful handmade batik piece looks festive and is a lot more respectful than a costume-shop version.
For Women: Kaftans, Sarongs & Scarves
A batik kaftan is the easiest one-piece answer: breezy, flattering, and instantly on-theme. Our Fiery Flora kaftan in red florals is made for a party, and the Tropical Tapestry kaftan leans green and tropical. Pair with flat sandals and gold jewelry.
A sarong is the most classic Indonesian piece. Wrap it as a skirt over a simple tank or bodysuit, or drape it as a shawl. Our Green Royalty batik sarong works both ways.
A long batik scarf instantly dresses up a white sundress or linen set. Wear it as a shawl, a head wrap, or knotted at the hip. Bright florals like Plumeria feel especially tropical. Browse all batik scarves.
A 39" bandana as a top or hair wrap. Folded into a triangle, an oversized bandana can be tied as a halter-style top over a bralette, or wrapped around the hair with flowers tucked in. The 39" Plumeria bandana is a favorite for this.
For Men: Linen, Batik & a Head Cloth
Start with linen trousers or shorts and a plain white or earth-toned shirt, then add one batik piece. Two easy options:
- A bandana tied as a head cloth. Balinese men traditionally wear an udeng, a folded head cloth. You don't need to replicate it exactly; a simple folded batik bandana tied around the head nods to it without imitating ceremonial dress. Try Tropical Tapestry or Red Storm.
- A bandana at the neck or in a pocket. Less statement, still on theme. See our men's bandanas.
For the Host: Dress the Part (and the Space)
As host, a batik robe or kimono is a comfortable, elegant choice that reads as effortless. The Sunset Sky robe or Orange Carnelian robe layer easily over a simple dress. Then carry the theme through the room with batik table linens and ikat pillows, and use bandanas as napkin wraps or party favors.
Party Favor Idea
Hand each guest a batik bandana as they arrive. They can wear it right away, it doubles as a souvenir, and it saves anyone who didn't dress up. Our 21" bandanas work well for this, and for larger groups our wholesale page has bulk options.
