Handmade Indonesian textiles can make a room feel warm and personal, but it's easy to tip into "everything is patterned" territory. The trick is treating batik and ikat like you'd treat art: a few strong pieces, placed with intention, with plenty of calm around them. Here's how to do it in the living room and bedroom.
Batik vs. Ikat at Home
Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique, so the pattern is dyed onto finished cloth. It tends toward crisp, detailed motifs. Ikat is woven: the threads are tie-dyed before weaving, which gives patterns a soft, feathered edge and a heavier hand. They look great together because one is crisp and one is blurred. More on the difference in Batik vs. Ikat.
Rule 1: Start With One Anchor Piece
Pick one larger textile to set the palette: a quilt at the foot of the bed, or a throw over the sofa arm. Our reversible patchwork quilt throw (55" x 87") is a good anchor because it's reversible, so you can flip it for a different mood. Then let smaller pieces repeat one or two of its colors.
Rule 2: Pillows in Odd Numbers, Mixed Scales
On a sofa, three or five pillows look more relaxed than two or four. Mix one bold pattern with one or two quieter ones, and vary the size: a 20" square with a 16" square and a 12" x 18" lumbar. For example:
- Bold: the Heritage Fire ikat pillow cover in black and orange.
- Medium: a brown ikat pillow cover that picks up its warmth.
- Quiet: a natural cream ikat cover to give the eye a rest.
Most of our covers are sold without inserts. If you need one, add a pillow insert. Browse every style in pillows & throws and ikat and batik pillow covers.
Rule 3: Keep the Big Surfaces Plain
The fastest way to avoid "full boho" is to keep the sofa, walls, rug, and bedding base solid or very subtly textured. Linen, white cotton, or a neutral wool let handmade pattern stand out instead of competing.
In the Bedroom
Lay a quilt folded across the bottom third of the bed over plain white or oatmeal bedding, then add one or two pillows that echo its colors. A handwoven ikat throw, like the gray and dark blue ikat throw, works well on a reading chair nearby. See all quilts and ikat throws.
In the Living Room
Drape a throw loosely over one sofa arm rather than folding it perfectly. Repeat a color from your pillows somewhere else in the room, like a vase, a book stack, or a handturned wooden bowl, so the textiles feel connected to the space rather than dropped in.
Small Ways to Start
Not ready for a quilt? A single batik pillow cover, like the greenish blue batik pillow cover, or even a framed batik bandana is enough to bring handmade pattern into a room. For the dining table, see how to style batik table runners and napkins.
Care
Hand-dyed and handwoven textiles last longest with gentle care: cold water, mild detergent, washed separately, and air dried out of direct sun. Our batik care guide has the details.
