Search for a batik robe and you'll find the same pieces called robes, kimonos, kaftans, and caftans, sometimes all in one listing. The names overlap, but the shapes and the ways you'd wear them are different. Here's a simple breakdown so you can choose the right one.

The Quick Version

  • Robe / kimono robe: open at the front, wraps and ties (or stays open), with sleeves. Worn over other clothes or over sleepwear.
  • Kaftan (caftan): a pullover dress, usually long and loose, with wide sleeves or a wide, flowing body. Worn on its own as a dress.
  • Quilted robe or jacket: a robe or kimono shape made from layered, quilted fabric, so it's warmer and holds more structure.

The Batik Robe (Kimono Robe)

In everyday Western use, "kimono" usually means a lightweight, open-front, wrap-style robe with wide sleeves, inspired by the Japanese garment rather than an actual traditional kimono. That's what our batik robes are: open-front wraps in hand-dyed 100% cotton that you can wear at home, belted as a light layer, or open over jeans and a tee.

Choose a robe if: you want something you'll wear in more than one way, both lounging at home and as a layer outside. Try Silver Petals in soft gray, Sunset Sky in blue and orange, or Orange Carnelian. We share more styling in Two Ways to Style Our Batik Kimono Robes.

The Batik Kaftan

A kaftan is a dress first. It goes over your head, falls loose from the shoulders, and doesn't need a belt or anything underneath, which makes it one of the most comfortable things you can wear on a hot day, on vacation, or to a casual party. Because there's a lot of uninterrupted fabric, a kaftan is also the best way to show off a large batik pattern.

Black Mirage hand-dyed cotton batik kaftan dress

Cotton or rayon? Our Black Mirage, Fiery Flora, and Tropical Tapestry kaftans are 100% soft cotton: breathable and easy to wash. Rayon kaftans like Vine Navy have a slinkier drape and feel cool on the skin, but should be washed cold and gently since rayon is more delicate when wet.

Choose a kaftan if: you want a one-and-done outfit for warm weather, travel, or a party. (Planning one? See What to Wear to a Bali-Themed Party.)

The Quilted Robe

A quilted robe takes the kimono shape and builds it from layered, stitched fabric. It's noticeably thicker and warmer, closer to a house coat or light jacket than a summer cover-up. Ours, like the thick quilted printed robe kimono, is made from upcycled patchwork, so each one is a little different.

Care for All Three

Hand-dyed batik should be washed cold and separately, especially at first, then air dried. Rayon needs a gentle cycle. Our batik care guide covers the details.
