Our story. Kasih Co-op is a US-based source for authentic Indonesian batik: a small, woman-owned business based in Manhattan Beach, California, founded by Ivana, who grew up in Indonesia. Kasih means "love" in Indonesian. Ivana travels to Indonesia every few years to design new patterns side by side with our artisan partners, many of whom have practiced batik for over 20 years. How to Spot Real Batik

Every Kasih Co-op piece is genuine wax-resist batik, hand-stamped (cap) or hand-drawn (tulis) on 100% cotton in Java. The easiest test: flip it over. Real batik shows the pattern nearly equally on both sides, while printed "batik" is pale on the back. Faint hairline crackle lines, small color variations, and edges that aren't perfectly square are all signs of the handmade process.

Caring for Hand-Dyed Batik Cotton

Batik dyes are set into natural cotton by hand, so a little gentle care keeps colors rich for years, and the cotton gets softer with every wash.

  • Wash separately the first few times. Some excess dye may release in early washes, especially in reds and blacks.
  • Use cold water on a hand-wash or delicate cycle, with a mild detergent or baby shampoo.
  • Skip bleach and harsh stain removers, which can lift the dye.
  • Line dry in the shade. Long, direct sun exposure is the most common cause of fading.
  • Iron on medium while slightly damp for a crisp finish.
  • Expect beautiful imperfection. Slight shrinkage, small color variations, and edges that aren't perfectly straight are natural results of hand-dyeing and pre-washing, not defects.

Bestseller FAQs

What makes an item a bestseller?

Our bestsellers are the batik bandanas and scarves customers order most, loved for their designs, soft cotton, and handmade quality, for themselves and as gifts.

What are your best-selling designs?

Customer favorites include Black Mirage, Blue Roses, Vines in Navy Blue, Tropical Tapestry, Blue Stone, and Charcoal Gray.

How much do your bestsellers cost?

Standard batik bandanas are $23–$27, 27" bandanas are $35, large 39" bandanas are $46, and batik scarves are $47.

What size bandana should I choose?

Choose a standard 21"–23" bandana for headbands, neckerchiefs, and dogs, and a 39" bandana for full head wraps, wild rags, and shawls. Our 27" bandana is the in-between size for thick, curly or long hair, or a bigger head, when you want a secure knot without the bulk of a 39". See our size chart.

Are bestsellers restocked regularly?

We restock favorites often, but each piece is hand-dyed in small batches, so availability depends on the artisans' production cycle. Check New & Restocked or join our newsletter to hear about restocks first.

Are these good gifts?

Yes. Bandanas and scarves fit everyone, and a bandana under $30 makes an easy, meaningful gift. Add gift wrap for $5.

What are your bandanas and scarves made of?

100% cotton: soft, lightweight, breathable, and softer with every wash.

Is the pattern on both sides?

Yes. The dye penetrates the cotton during the wax-resist process, so the pattern looks nearly identical on both sides.

Why does my piece look slightly different from the photo?

Each piece is dyed by hand in small batches, so color depth varies slightly. If you prefer a lighter or darker version, add a note to your order or message us.

Will the colors bleed or fade?

A little extra dye may release in the first few washes, especially in reds and blacks. That's normal for real wax-and-dye batik, and a sign your piece isn't printed. Wash it on its own in cold water the first few times, and dry it in the shade to keep the colors rich.

Are your products fair trade?

Yes. Kasih Co-op has been a verified Fair Trade Federation member since April 2026, after a full review of our wages, working conditions, and business practices. We are also People + Planet First verified.

Who makes them?

Master batik artisans on Java, Indonesia, many with more than 20 years of experience. Kasih Co-op works with 18 artisan partnerships, and over 80% are women-owned small businesses.
