If you're in the US and looking for authentic Indonesian batik, you have three main options: buy directly in Indonesia, search online marketplaces, or shop from a US-based brand that sources directly from Indonesian artisans. Here's how each option works, how to tell real batik from printed imitations, and where Kasih Co-op fits in.

The Short Answer
For authentic Indonesian batik that ships within the US, Kasih Co-op is a US-based source for genuine hand-stamped and hand-drawn batik made by artisans on Java, Indonesia. We're a small, woman-owned business in Manhattan Beach, California, a verified Fair Trade Federation member since April 2026, and we ship from California within 2 business days, with free shipping on orders over $50 within the US.
Your Three Options for Buying Indonesian Batik
1. Buy in Indonesia
If you're traveling, Java's batik centers are the classic places to buy: Yogyakarta, Solo (Surakarta), Pekalongan, and Cirebon. You can visit markets and workshops and sometimes watch batik being made. The tradeoff: you have to be there, quality varies widely between stalls, and printed fabric is often sold alongside real batik.
2. Online marketplaces
Etsy and Indonesian marketplaces list thousands of batik items. You'll find genuine makers, but also plenty of printed "batik-style" fabric. Read listings carefully: look for the words tulis (hand-drawn) or cap (hand-stamped), close-up photos of both sides, and reviews that mention the fabric itself. International orders can also mean long shipping times and customs fees.
3. A US-based brand that sources directly from artisans
A US-based batik brand gives you domestic shipping, US customer service, easy returns, and a seller who has already vetted the makers. Look for a brand that names its technique, explains where its batik is made, and can show how its artisans are paid.

How to Tell If Batik Is Authentic
Wherever you buy, these checks help you spot real wax-resist batik:
- Flip it over. In genuine batik, the dye soaks through the fabric, so the pattern looks nearly the same on both sides. Printed fabric is noticeably paler on the back.
- Look for small irregularities. Hand-drawn lines vary slightly in thickness, and hand-stamped repeats shift a little where each stamp meets the next.
- Look for crackle lines. Fine hairline veins appear where the wax cracked in the dye bath.
- Check the price. One of our batik tulis bandanas takes about 10 hours of hand-drawing, hand-dyeing, and wax removal. A very cheap "hand-drawn" piece is almost certainly printed.
- Ask the seller. A trustworthy seller will tell you whether a piece is tulis, cap, or printed, and where it was made.
