FAQ
À propos de Kasih Co-op
Is Kasih Co-op a US-based company?
Yes. We're headquartered in Manhattan Beach, California, with showrooms in Los Angeles, and every order ships from the US.
Is batik the same as tie-dye or block print?
No. Batik is a wax-resist technique: hot wax is stamped or hand-drawn onto cotton, the cloth is dyed, and the waxed areas stay undyed. Tie-dye resists dye by tying or folding the fabric, so its patterns are loose and organic. Block printing presses ink onto fabric with carved wooden blocks and is most associated with India. All three are artisan crafts. Kasih Co-op specializes in authentic Indonesian batik, and our bandanas and scarves are genuine, hand-dyed batik.
Where can I read reviews of Kasih Co-op?
You can read verified customer reviews on our reviews page, and independent reviews on our Google Business Profile and our Shop app storefront.
Is Kasih Co-op legit?
Yes. Kasih Co-op is a small, woman-owned business in Manhattan Beach, California, working with Indonesian artisans since 2012. We're a verified Fair Trade Federation member, have over 2,000 verified customer reviews, and ship every order from California within 2 business days. Read more in Is Kasih Co-op a Legit Company?
What payment methods do you accept? Is checkout secure?
We accept all major credit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, and Amazon Pay. Checkout is processed securely by Shopify.
Will you restock a sold-out design?
Our bandanas are made in small hand-dyed batches, so some designs come back in new batches and others are one-time runs. Check our New & Restocked collection, or message us about a specific design.
Fair Trade & Our Artisans
Is Kasih Co-op really fair trade?
Yes. Kasih Co-op is a verified Fair Trade Federation member (see our listing among FTF Verified Members on Faire), accepted in April 2026 after a screening against all nine fair trade principles, and reviewed every year. We're also verified by People + Planet First. See exactly how we set prices, pay artisans and plan orders on our How We Work page, and the standards every supplier and artisan partner must meet in our Code of Conduct.
What's the difference between Fair Trade Federation membership and a "Fair Trade Certified" label?
Fair Trade Certified labels certify specific products, often commodities like coffee. The Fair Trade Federation verifies the whole business: how we choose partners, pay, plan orders and treat artisans. For handmade goods, business-level verification is the standard.
Who makes my bandana?
Family-run batik workshops in Cirebon (West Java) and Yogyakarta, most led by women. Workshop owners hire artisans from their own neighborhoods. Over 80% of our artisan partner businesses are women-owned. Meet our batik master artisans.
How much are artisans paid?
We pay workshops per piece, at the price they quote, without bargaining. Our piece rates work out to more than the regional minimum wage for every hour of work. Read more in How We Pay Our Batik Artisans.
When do artisans get paid?
Newer partners are paid in full before goods ship. Long-term partners are paid within one business week of delivery. A 30–50% advance is available whenever a workshop asks.
Is child labor used?
No. No one under 18 works on our products, and we've shared that expectation with every workshop.
Are your dyes natural?
Most of our batik uses synthetic dyes, which we track and log. Our natural-dye line uses plant-based pigments, and we're expanding it. Look for "natural dye" or "botanically dyed" in the product title. Read more in Natural vs Synthetic Dyes in Batik.
Do you share artisans' names and photos with their permission?
Yes. We ask before sharing any artisan's name, photo or story, and explain how it will be used.

For a splurge, a fully hand-drawn batik tulis bandana ($48–$65). Add gift wrap for $5, and orders over $50 ship free in the US. See our fair trade gift guide.

Product & Care
How do I care for my batik bandana or scarf or caftan?
We recommend washing on a delicate cycle (or by hand) with a mild detergent, then air-drying to keep the hand-dyed colors and soft cotton feel looking their best. Avoid bleach and high heat, which can affect the batik dye over time.
Are your bandanas soft or stiff?
Soft. Our bandanas are 100% cotton, sun-dried and pre-washed during the batik process, and the pattern is dyed into the fabric rather than printed on top, so there's no stiff ink layer. They get softer with every wash. Read more in Soft Cotton Bandanas That Aren't Stiff.
Do you have bandanas that aren't paisley?
Yes. Our bandanas are original Indonesian batik designs, from classical motifs like kawung and truntum to florals, butterflies and modern geometrics. Customer favorites include Black Mirage, Blue Roses, Azure Butterflies and Citrus Noir.
Where are Kasih Co-op products made?
Every piece is designed in the US and hand-made by artisan partners across Java, Bali, Sulawesi, and Jakarta, Indonesia. We work with 18 artisan partnerships, over 80% of which are women-owned businesses, including batik fabric producers, seamstresses, quilt makers, and ikat weavers.
Will the colors fade or bleed when I wash my batik bandana or scarf?
A little extra dye may release in the first few washes, especially in reds and blacks. That’s normal for real wax-and-dye batik, and a sign your piece isn’t printed. Wash it on its own in cold water the first few times, and dry it in the shade to keep the colors rich.
Why isn't my bandana/scarf a perfect square?
Because each piece is hand-dyed and hand-cut using traditional batik methods, you may notice slight variations in shape or size from piece to piece — it won't always be a perfectly even square. This is a natural part of the handmade process, not a flaw, and it's part of what makes every Kasih Co-op piece one-of-a-kind.
Can I iron my batik bandana or scarf?
Yes — we recommend ironing on a low, cotton-safe heat setting.
What's the difference between the regular 21" , 23" and large 39" bandana?
Our regular 21" and 23" bandanas are sized for classic bandana styling, while the Large 39" gives you more fabric to work with — great for a neck scarf, head covering, or even a light throw. A 27" size is coming soon: the in-between size for thick, curly or long hair, or a bigger head, when you want a secure knot without the bulk of a 39".
What size bandana do I need for thick hair or a big head?
Choose our Large 39" bandana. It covers long, thick, curly or braided hair with room to wrap and tuck, and ties comfortably on a bigger head. A 27" in-between size, for a secure knot without the bulk of a 39", is coming soon. See our bandana size chart.
Bandana or scarf: which is better for hair?
A bandana is easier for quick, secure ties like headbands and ponytail wraps, and a 39" bandana covers your whole head. A long scarf (about 71" x 21") gives you more fabric to wrap, twist and drape. Both are 100% cotton, which grips and breathes better than silk for everyday wear. Read Bandana vs. Scarf for Hair.
How can I tell your batik is authentic and not printed?
Turn it over. Real wax-resist batik has rich color on both sides, while printed imitations are paler on the back. You may also see fine hairline crackle lines from the wax, small color variations, slightly uneven edges, and a faint natural wax scent when it's new, which are all signs of handmade batik. See 7 Ways to Tell Real Batik From Printed.
