Most bandanas sold today are around 20" to 22" square. That's fine for a pocket or a light neckerchief, but plenty of men find it too small once they try to tie it around the head, wear it as a wild rag, or knot it around a thicker neck with room to spare. If you've ever had a bandana barely reach around for a knot, it's not you, it's the size.
Regular vs. Large: Which Should You Get?
Regular (21") works best for pocket squares, belt loops, back pockets, sweat rags, and a simple neckerchief. Browse our 21" batik bandanas.
Large (39" x 39") is the one to get if you want a full head wrap, a wild rag, a neck gaiter for cold or dusty days, or simply a more relaxed knot. Our oversized 39" bandanas have nearly four times the fabric of a standard square, so there's always enough to tie comfortably.
For exact measurements by head and neck size, see the bandana size chart, and if you have a larger head or longer hair, our oversized bandana fit guide.
What to Look For
- 100% cotton. It breathes, absorbs sweat, and holds a knot. Polyester is cheaper but stays slick and hot. (More in Cotton vs. Silk vs. Polyester Bandanas.)
- Pattern on both sides. Hand-dyed batik shows its pattern on both faces, so it looks right however it's folded.
- Colors you'll actually wear. Navy, charcoal, black, and brown are the easiest for most guys to work into a wardrobe.
8 Ways to Wear a Large Bandana
- Wild rag. Fold into a triangle, wrap the ends around the neck, and tie loosely in front. Warm in the cold, shade from the sun, and a classic ranch look.
- Full head wrap. Fold into a triangle, place the long edge across the forehead, and tie the ends at the back over the point. A 39" bandana covers the whole head with room to knot.
- Neck gaiter. Fold into a wide band and wrap twice around the neck. Handy for dusty trails, motorcycle rides, and cold mornings.
- Headband. Roll into a narrow band. With a large bandana you can wrap it twice for a thicker, more secure sweatband.
- Belt loop or back pocket. Fold into a strip and hang it from a loop. Here's how to tie a bandana on your belt loop.
- Cooling cloth. Soak in cold water, wring out, and drape over the back of the neck on hot days. Cotton holds water far longer than polyester.
- Bundle or gift wrap. Tie up lunch, small gear, or a gift. A large square is big enough for a bottle or a book.
- Bag or pack accent. Knot around a backpack strap or duffel handle so it's always on hand.
