Large Bandana Guides

How to Wear a 39" Bandana (8 Ways)

The extra fabric is what makes the 39" size so versatile. For more hair styles, see 7 Easy Bandana Hairstyles.

  1. Full head wrap. Fold into a triangle, place the long edge at your hairline, tie the ends snugly at the nape over the point, then twist the tails and tuck them around the knot. Covers long, thick, curly, or braided hair comfortably.
  2. Turban twist. Start like the full head wrap, twist the two tails into a rope, wrap it around the crown, and tuck the end underneath for a sculpted look.
  3. Wild rag. Fold into a triangle, drape the point in front, cross the ends behind your neck, bring them forward, and tie a square knot under the point. See the wild rag guide below.
  4. Shoulder shawl. Fold into a triangle and drape it over your shoulders, knotting loosely in front for a light layer.
  5. Neck scarf. Fold into a long band and loop it once or twice around your neck for a fuller scarf look.
  6. Hip wrap or beach cover. Fold into a triangle and tie at the hip over swimwear or a dress.
  7. Large-dog bandana. Fold into a triangle and knot behind the neck, leaving two fingers of room. The 39" size fits large breeds.
  8. Gift wrap. Wrap a bottle, book, or box furoshiki-style and knot the corners on top. The wrap becomes a second gift.
21" vs. 39" Bandanas: Which Size Should I Get?

How to Tie a Wild Rag

A wild rag is a large square neckerchief worn by ranchers and riders for warmth, sun, and dust protection. A 39" cotton batik bandana makes a breathable, lightweight wild rag for warm days and layering.

  1. Fold the bandana in half diagonally into a triangle.
  2. Drape it around your neck with the point hanging in front.
  3. Cross the two ends behind your neck and bring them back to the front.
  4. Tie the ends in a square knot just under the point, or slide them through a wild rag slide.
  5. Tuck the knot under the point and adjust the drape.

Cotton breathes and washes easily, so it's a comfortable choice in warm weather. Silk wild rags are warmer and slicker for cold-weather layering.

Real Batik and the Motifs You'll See

Every large bandana is genuine wax-resist batik, hand-stamped with copper blocks, sun-baked, and pre-washed on Java. The easiest test: flip it over. Real batik shows the pattern and color nearly equally on both sides, while printed "batik" is pale on the back. Faint hairline crackle lines and small color variations are other signs of the handmade process.

  • Kawung. One of the oldest classical Javanese motifs, from the royal courts of Java, inspired by the cross-section of the sugar palm fruit. Often read as a symbol of purity and wisdom.
  • Batu Pecah (Broken Stone). An organic crackle pattern inspired by fractured stone, seen in our Blue Stone design.
  • Bunga (flowers) and vines. Botanical designs such as Blue Tendril (Bunga Biru) and Blue Roses reflect the coastal batik tradition of Java's north shore.
  • Modern geometrics. Designs like Leaf Grid and Black Mirage are contemporary patterns created with our artisan partners using the same traditional wax-resist craft.
Caring for Hand-Dyed Batik Cotton

Batik dyes are set into natural cotton by hand, so a little gentle care keeps colors rich for years, and the cotton gets softer with every wash.

  • Wash separately the first few times. Some excess dye may release in early washes, especially in deep reds, indigos, and browns.
  • Use cold water on a hand-wash or delicate cycle, with a mild detergent or baby shampoo.
  • Skip bleach and harsh stain removers, which can lift the dye.
  • Line dry in the shade. Long, direct sun exposure is the most common cause of fading.
  • Iron on medium while slightly damp for a crisp finish.
  • Expect beautiful imperfection. Slight shrinkage, small color variations, and edges that aren't perfectly straight are natural results of hand-dyeing and pre-washing, not defects.

Large 39" Bandana FAQs

What size are your large bandanas?

About 39" x 39" (100 cm square). Because each piece is hand-dyed and pre-washed, sizes vary slightly and most are not perfectly square.

Is a 39" bandana big enough for a full head wrap?

Yes. The 39" size is our recommendation for full head wraps, turbans, and head coverings, including for long, thick, curly, or braided hair.

What's the difference between your 21" and 39" bandanas?

The 39" bandana has nearly three times the fabric of a 22" bandana. Choose 39" for head wraps, wild rags, and shawls, and the standard size for headbands, ponytail ties, and neckerchiefs.

Can I wear it as a wild rag?

Yes. Fold it into a triangle, drape the point in front, cross the ends behind your neck, and tie a square knot in front. The 100% cotton is breathable and easy to wash.

Can I use it as a shawl, sarong, or beach cover?

Yes. The 39" bandana works as a light shoulder shawl, a hip wrap, or a beach cover over swimwear.

How much do your large bandanas cost?

Our large 39" batik bandanas are $46 each.

Is the pattern on both sides?

Yes. The dye penetrates the cotton during the wax-resist process, so the pattern looks nearly identical on the front and back. This is the hallmark of authentic batik.

Why does my bandana look slightly different from the photo?

Each bandana is dyed by hand in small batches, so color depth can vary from batch to batch and from screen to screen. If you prefer a lighter or darker version of a design, add a note to your order or message us and we'll do our best to pick one for you.

Will the colors bleed or fade?

A little excess dye can release in the first few washes, so wash separately at first. To prevent fading, wash in cold water and dry in the shade.

Have your bandanas been featured anywhere?

Yes. One of our large batik bandanas was chosen as a prop for Idina Menzel's Broadway musical Redwood in New York. Kasih Co-op has also been featured by Nordstrom, the Los Angeles Times, and CBS.

Is it big enough for a large dog?

Yes. Folded into a triangle, the 39" bandana fits large-breed dogs. For small and medium dogs, our standard bandanas fit better.

Are your products fair trade?

Yes. Kasih Co-op has been a verified Fair Trade Federation member since April 2026, after a full review of our wages, working conditions, and business practices. We are also People + Planet First verified.

Who makes them?

Master batik artisans on Java, Indonesia, many with more than 20 years of experience. Kasih Co-op works with 18 artisan partnerships, and over 80% are women-owned small businesses.

How fast do you ship?

Orders ship from California within 2 business days. Standard shipping takes 4–8 business days, and Priority shipping takes 2–5 business days. Every order includes tracking.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes, free shipping on orders over $50 within the US.

What is your return policy?
