Some Indonesian words don’t have direct English translations.
Not because English is limited, but because the experience behind these words is shaped by culture.
Language is more than vocabulary.
It reflects how people relate, react, tease, feel, and understand each other. That’s why some words can only exist in the culture that created them.
• Kan
A single word that often carries a whole sentence.
-
Can imply “I told you”, “you already knew this”, or “see what I mean?”
-
Relies on shared context and mutual understanding
-
Assumes the listener is already “in on it”
Example:
“Kan?” — See? That’s exactly what I meant.
• Baper
Short for bawa perasaan.
-
Being emotionally affected without intending to be
-
Catching feelings accidentally
-
Often said jokingly, even when the feeling is real
English can explain it, but it can’t fully capture the mix of vulnerability and self-awareness that baper carries.
• Nanggung
A word for being stuck in-between.
-
Not enough to fully commit
-
Too much to walk away
-
Awkwardly suspended in the middle
It reflects a cultural sensitivity to timing, balance, and social appropriateness.
• Kok
A mood-driven word that changes meaning depending on tone. Can express confusion, disbelief, surprise, or defense.
Examples:
“Kok gitu?” — Why like that?
“Kok tau?” — How do you know?
“Iya, kok.” — How did you even know?
“Kok bisa?” — How come?
The meaning isn’t in the grammar—it’s in the emotion.
• Gemas
An overwhelming emotional reaction.
-
From extreme cuteness
-
Or from deep frustration
Example:
“Gemas banget ngeliatnya”
Can mean:
-
It’s so cute I can’t handle it
-
It’s so annoying to watch
Opposite emotions, held in one word.
Why Do These Words Exist?
These words are shaped by Indonesian culture—one that values context, emotional awareness, and shared understanding.
They aren’t meant to stand alone. They’re meant to be felt together.
Some words can be translated. Others can only be understood through experience. Because language is culture and culture builds the words we need.
