Batik clothing has long been part of everyday and formal dress in Indonesia, and it's easier to wear than you might think. If you're new to batik clothing, this guide covers what it is, the three pieces we make most (robes, kimonos and kaftans) and how to style them.

What Is Batik Clothing?

Batik clothing is made from fabric decorated with batik, the Indonesian wax-resist technique. Hot wax is applied to cotton, the cloth is dyed, and the wax is removed to reveal the pattern. Because the dye penetrates the cotton, the pattern shows on both sides. New to the craft? Start with what is batik.

Robe, Kimono or Kaftan: Which Is Which?

The three overlap, but they're cut differently:

  • Robe / kimono: an open-front, wrap-style piece with a tie or belt, worn as a lounge layer, a beach cover-up or a light jacket. Sunset Sky robe/kimono ($99).
  • Kaftan: a loose, long, pull-over dress with a relaxed silhouette and no waist. Stone batik kaftan dress in soft cotton ($125).

How to Wear Batik Clothing

As a Layer

Wear a batik robe or kimono open over a plain T-shirt or tank and jeans or trousers. Let the pattern be the only statement in the outfit.

At Home

A soft cotton robe is a comfortable lounge layer. A robe is also a thoughtful gift; see our holiday gift guide.

On Vacation

A kaftan over a swimsuit or with sandals works as a beach cover-up or an easy dinner dress. It packs flat and the cotton breathes in warm weather.

With Accessories

Echo one color from the pattern in a batik bandana or scarf: tie a bandana at the neck, in your hair or on a bag handle. For ideas see 8 ways to wear a large bandana as a neck scarf.

Care

Hand-dyed batik can release a little extra dye in the first few washes, especially in reds and blacks. Wash separately in cold water, skip bleach and dry in the shade. See our first-wash guide and batik care guide.
