3. Tumaruntum: Sincerity and Everlasting Love
Tumaruntum comes with a royal origin story. Created by Queen Kencana of Surakarta, the motif expressed her longing for love to “grow again,” which is the literal meaning of Tumaruntum.
The pattern symbolizes sincerity, loyalty, and enduring affection, making it especially popular at Javanese weddings. Many creators of authentic bandanas and scarves still use this motif to capture its heartfelt symbolism.

4. Mega Mendung: Calmness Amid Turbulence
This famous cloudlike design from Cirebon is one of Indonesia’s most recognizable batik motifs. Meaning “clouds before the rain,” Mega Mendung represents patience, calmness, and emotional control.
Influenced by Chinese artistic styles, the motif reminds us that challenges come and go, just like passing clouds. Its bold yet soothing look makes it a popular choice in both traditional garments and contemporary batik fabric accessories. We nickname our Mega Mendung bandanas “Storm.”

5. Sekar Jagad: Harmony and Universal Beauty
“Sakar Jagad,” meaning “flowers of the universe,” is a vibrant mosaic-like batik pattern that represents unity and love. Often worn during wedding ceremonies, it symbolizes the hope for a harmonious, balanced life.

6. Tambal: Healing and Renewal
Tambal literally means “patch,” and the motif’s design of irregular, differently-patterned squares pieced together looks exactly like mended fabric. It symbolizes healing, repair, and self-improvement.
In Javanese tradition, the sick were once wrapped in Tambal-patterned cloth in the hope that it would help restore their health, as much through the comfort of family care as through the symbolism of “patching” what was broken. We currently carry this motif in our Apricot Patchwork colorway.

7. Udan Liris: Fertility, Hope, and Prosperity

Udan Liris means “drizzling rain” or “light shower.” In Indonesian culture, rain is a life-giving blessing, so the motif symbolizes fertility, hope, and prosperity, and is worn as a wish for a fruitful life.

8. Ceplok: Order, Balance, and Symmetry
Ceplok is one of the broadest and oldest families of Javanese batik, built from a repeating grid of geometric shapes, diamonds, squares, circles, or stars, each enclosing a small flower or rosette. The result is a pattern of quiet, symmetrical order.
There are dozens of named Ceplok variations, each with its own story, but the family as a whole is a visual expression of balance and harmony in life.

9. Semen: Fertility and Growth
Semen comes from the Javanese word “semi,” to sprout or grow. The motif densely weaves stylized trees and plants, sometimes read as a “tree of life,” together with star or flower fillers, covering the cloth with almost no open background.
It’s one of the oldest and most symbolically rich batik families, representing fertility, growth, and the connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds. Semen cloth is traditionally worn at weddings to bless new beginnings.

10. Lereng: Perseverance and Steadfastness
Lereng means “slope” or “hillside,” and its parallel diagonal bands echo the rising and falling lines of a hill. As part of the Parang family of motifs, Lereng symbolizes perseverance and steadfastness through life’s ups and downs.
Like Parang, Lereng was historically a restricted pattern, reserved for Javanese royalty. Today it’s prized for its clean, graphic geometry as much as its meaning.
