The bandana is a beautiful print but there was some sort of black resin stuck to it that would not come off after washing it twice

Hi Pete, Thank you for your note. We have reached out to you about this feedback as we offer return and refund for our purchases if you are not satisfied with them. The black resins on our bandanas are wax that would wash off. Our artisans would hand-stamp white fabric using hot wax and then boil off the wax after dyeing the fabric. Sometimes, there may still be leftover wax residue on the fabric, that can be washed off. Take a look at our batik wax and dye process here: https://www.kasihcoop.com/blogs/news/our-batik-wax- and-dye-method-video-from-start-to-finish We also have a video on how to remove the wax resin here: https://youtube.com/shorts/EXtW55hX8Xg We have noted your feedback to our Quality Control team. Thank you

Eye-catching Asian batik print. Wash it gently with no wringing and dry flat. To look it's very best, if you are really picky like me, it needs a touch of ironing. Still, I would buy again.

Handgemaakte 700 jaar oude batikwas & resisttechniek

Veelgestelde vragen over Batik Sjaals & Bandana's

Voorzichtigheid is geboden:

  2. Wasmiddel: Gebruik een mild wasmiddel. Gebruik nooit chloorbleekmiddel of agressieve wasmiddelen.

How should I wash my batik so the colors last?

Gentle is key:

  1. Wash separately, especially the first few times.
  2. Hand wash in cold water, or machine wash cold on a delicate cycle inside a mesh bag.
  3. Use a mild detergent or baby shampoo. Never use bleach or harsh stain removers.
  4. Air-dry in the shade. Don't wring or twist, and avoid long direct sun exposure.
  5. Iron on medium while slightly damp for a crisp finish.
Will the colors bleed or fade?

A little excess dye can release in the first few washes, especially in reds and blacks, so wash separately at first. Fading is mostly caused by direct sun: cold washing and drying in the shade keep colors vibrant for years.

What do batik motifs like Parang, Kawung, and Mega Mendung mean?

Batik motifs are a visual language with deep meanings:

  • Parang: a diagonal, wave-like pattern from Central Java's royal courts, symbolizing strength, continuity, and resilience.
  • Kawung: one of the oldest motifs, intersecting circles inspired by the sugar palm fruit, symbolizing purity, justice, and remembering one's origins.
  • Mega Mendung: layered clouds from Cirebon, representing patience and staying calm and controlled in the face of problems.
  • Batu Pecah (Broken Stone): an organic crackle pattern inspired by fractured stone.
  • Kamboja (Frangipani) and other florals: coastal batik from Java's north shore embraced flowers and bright colors, reflecting centuries of trade.
Why is Indonesian batik considered a unique cultural heritage?

Indonesian batik is a living tradition. In 2009, UNESCO inscribed Indonesian batik on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The craft is deeply tied to Indonesian identity and visual storytelling, with techniques and symbolic meanings passed down through generations. Some Javanese motifs were historically reserved for royalty.

Who made it, and is it made fairly?

Your piece was made by master batik artisans on Java, Indonesia, many with more than 20 years of experience. Each one is hand-stamped with hot wax (batik cap) or drawn by hand with a canting pen (batik tulis, about 10 hours of work per piece), then hand-dyed by a family-run batik workshop in Cirebon or Yogyakarta. Kasih Co-op works with 18 artisan partnerships, and over 80% are women-owned small businesses.

Kasih Co-op has been a verified Fair Trade Federation member since April 2026 (see our listing among FTF Verified Members on Faire), after a full review of our wages, working conditions, and business practices, and is also People + Planet First verified. Our piece rates pay artisans above the regional minimum wage for every hour of work, and we agree prices with each workshop before production starts. We plan orders months ahead so work stays steady. A portion of profits supports education for girls in Indonesia.
