You wash your new batik bandana for the first time and the water turns pink, or a little color shows up on a towel. Did something go wrong? Usually, no. A little extra dye in the first washes is normal for real, hand-dyed batik. Here's why it happens, what to do and how to keep your colors rich.

Does Batik Bleed?

It can, a little. Real batik is made by applying wax to cotton, then dyeing the cloth by hand so the dye soaks into the fibers. Because the dye goes into the fabric (and the pattern shows on both sides), a small amount of excess dye can release in the first few washes, especially in reds and blacks, which are the deepest, most saturated colors. A little extra dye is a sign of authentic batik, not a printed imitation. Learn how to tell the difference in how to spot real vs. fake batik.

How to Wash a New Batik Bandana

  1. Wash it separately. For the first few washes, wash the bandana on its own, or with similar dark colors, never with whites or light fabrics.
  2. Use cold water. Choose a hand-wash or delicate cycle with a mild detergent or baby shampoo.
  3. Skip bleach and harsh stain removers. They can lift the dye.
  4. Rinse until the water runs mostly clear. If a lot of color keeps coming out, rinse again in cold water.
  5. Dry in the shade. Line dry away from long, direct sun, which is the most common cause of fading.
  6. Iron on medium while slightly damp for a crisp finish.

Will My Batik Fade Over Time?

Like any dyed cotton, batik colors soften gradually with washing and sun. Washing cold, using a mild detergent and drying in the shade keeps them richer for longer. The cotton also gets softer with every wash. If you need to remove a stain, use our batik stain removal guide.

If Dye Gets on Something Else

Rinse the item in cold water as soon as you notice, and don't put it in the dryer until the stain is gone. If it's a stubborn stain on a light fabric, treat it as you would any dye transfer, and check the care label of the item first.

Quick FAQ

Is bleeding a defect? No. A little extra dye in the first washes is normal for real hand-dyed batik, especially reds and blacks.

Can I put my bandana in the washing machine? Yes, on a delicate or hand-wash cycle in cold water, on its own at first.

What about slight color differences between pieces? Each bandana is dyed by hand in small batches, so color depth varies slightly from piece to piece. That's part of what makes it handmade.
