A black bandana goes with everything, which is exactly why almost everyone owns one. The trouble is that most black bandanas are the same black-and-white paisley square, printed on one side, slightly stiff, and easy to forget. A hand-dyed batik version keeps everything that makes a black bandana useful and adds pattern, softness, and a story. Here's how to choose one and how to wear it.
Why Go Batik for a Black Bandana?
In batik, wax is applied by hand before the cloth is dyed, so the pattern goes all the way through the fabric and looks nearly the same on both sides. That matters more than you'd think with a black bandana: whichever way you fold or knot it, you never see a faded, blank reverse. Every one of ours is 100% cotton, so it softens with every wash instead of fading to a dull gray-black polyester sheen.
Pick Your Black: Three Directions
Black and white. The closest to a classic bandana, but with traditional Indonesian motifs instead of paisley. Try Black Mirage, Onyx Pinwheel, Midnight ZigZag, or Machete and Flower Petals.
Black and brown. Warmer and earthier, and easier to pair with leather, denim, and fall layers. Shadow & Soil and Harvest are our go-tos here, and Panther Paws adds a hint of orange.
Black with a pop of color. If you want a black base with a little personality, the Black Red Star and Citrus Noir are both mostly black with a bright accent.
Regular or Large?
Our regular bandanas are 21" square, the right size for a neckerchief, a headband, a pocket square, or a bag tie. If you want a black bandana you can wear as a full head wrap, a wild rag, or a small shawl, go for a large 39" bandana, like the 39" Black Mirage, 39" Horn Beetle, or 39" Geometric Black & White. The bandana size chart has exact measurements by use.
Six Ways to Wear a Black Batik Bandana
- Classic neckerchief. Fold into a triangle, roll from the long edge, and knot at the side of the neck. Works with a white tee, a denim jacket, or a leather jacket.
- Wild rag. With a 39" bandana, fold into a triangle, wrap the ends around your neck, and tie loosely in front. Warm, practical, and very good-looking over a flannel or a field jacket.
- Headband. Fold into a 2" band and tie at the nape of the neck. Black hides sweat and keeps hair back on runs, hikes, and long workdays.
- Back-pocket or belt-loop flag. Fold into a long rectangle and let it hang from a back pocket, or loop it through a belt loop. Here's how to tie a bandana on your belt loop.
- Bag accent. Tie around the handle of a tote or leather bag. A black-and-brown bandana on a cognac bag is an easy win.
- Full head wrap. With a 39" size, a black bandana makes a sleek, full-coverage head wrap that doesn't pull tight at the knot. See our oversized bandana fit guide.
Black Batik Care
Dark batik can release some dye in the first few washes. Wash cold, by itself, and air dry. After that, it settles into a soft, deep black that keeps its pattern. Full instructions are in our batik care guide.
