Most "how to pick a bandana size" advice is vague — "choose large if you want more coverage." That doesn't tell you much if you're standing in front of a few folded squares of fabric trying to guess. Here's the actual chart: real measurements, matched to real use cases.
The Three Sizes, By the Numbers
| ~21" Regular | 22" x 23" | 39" Large | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat dimensions | ~21" x 21" (53cm x 53cm) | 22" x 23" (56cm x 58cm) | 39" x 39" (99cm x 99cm) |
| Folded triangle, long edge | ~15 inches | ~16 inches | ~27 inches |
| Folded triangle, short point to long edge | ~10.5 inches | ~11 inches | ~19.5 inches |
| Price | $23 | $27 | $46 |
Note: because each bandana is hand-dyed and hand-cut by artisans, exact measurements can vary by up to an inch — this is a feature of handmade batik, not a defect. The 22" x 23" size in particular isn't perfectly square, which is normal for this piece.
By Head Circumference
Wrap a soft measuring tape around your head at the widest point (just above your ears and eyebrows) to get your circumference, then match it below.
| Head circumference | Recommended size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 21" | ~21" Regular | Standard size ties comfortably with room to spare |
| 21"–22.5" | 22" x 23" | A little extra fabric over the smallest regular size, without jumping all the way to the large |
| 22.5"–24.5" | 22" x 23" or 39" Large | 22" x 23" still works snugly; go large for a looser, more comfortable tie |
| Above 24.5" | 39" Large | Both smaller sizes will pull tight at the knot or require stretching the fabric |
Don't have a measuring tape handy? As a rough guide: most fitted baseball caps are labeled S/M for roughly 21"–22.5" and L/XL for 22.5"–24". If you wear L/XL hats, go with the 22" x 23" size at minimum, and the 39" large bandana if you also have thick or long hair.
By Hair Length & Thickness
Head circumference isn't the only factor — hair adds real bulk that the fabric needs to cover.
| Hair situation | Recommended size |
|---|---|
| Short hair (above shoulders) | ~21" Regular |
| Shoulder-length, fine/thin | ~21" Regular or 22" x 23" |
| Shoulder-length, thick, or a small ponytail/bun | 22" x 23" |
| Past shoulders, medium to thick | 39" Large |
| Long, thick, curly, or in a bun/braid | 39" Large |
| Locs, protective styles, or full coverage needed | 39" Large |
By Use Case
Not everyone is buying a bandana for their head. Here's the size that fits each common use:
- Neckerchief / neck scarf: Any size works — ~21" for a closer, simpler tie; 22" x 23" for a bit more drape; 39" for a looser, more dramatic look.
- Wrist tie or bag accent: ~21" Regular — the larger sizes are more fabric than these uses need.
- Ponytail or bun wrap: ~21" Regular for a small bun, 22" x 23" for a medium bun, 39" Large for a bigger bun or thicker hair.
- Full head wrap, turban, or hijab style: 39" Large only — the two smaller sizes don't have enough fabric for full coverage.
- Halter top or bandeau styling: 39" Large — you need the extra width to cover comfortably.
- Pet bandana (worn as a collar accent): ~21" Regular, folded down further for smaller pets.
Quick Answer
If you only remember one thing: ~21" is for simple, everyday ties. 22" x 23" is the sweet spot for slightly bigger heads or a bit more hair without going oversized. 39" is for anything involving real hair coverage, a bigger head, or a full wrap. When in doubt between sizes, size up — a larger bandana can always be folded smaller, but a smaller one can't be stretched larger.
